Doom-franchisen har solgt over 10 millioner eksemplarer globalt og er i dag anerkendt for at være en af de bedste videospilserier nogensinde.
Spillet blev udviklet af det uafhængige amerikanske spiludviklingsselskab id Software. Selskabet havde tidligere udgivet det populære Wolfenstein 3D fra 1992. Selskabet ville bruge deres nye 3D-spilmotor i et nyt spil. Firmaets designchefer, John Romero og John Carmack, producerede derfor Doom. Et mere dystert ‘first-person shooter’-spil, som gav spillere mulighed for at myrde flokke af dæmoner med et bredt udvalg af dødbringende våben. Da spillet udkom i 1993, blev det anset for at være et af de mest blodige og kontroversielle spil nogensinde.
Allerede i løbet af det første år mener spilhistorikere, at over 20 millioner mennesker spillede Doom. Mange spilhistorikere mener, at Doom var central for industriens skift mod 3D-spil i de efterfølgende årtier.

After a quick rise to fame in the gaming world through the success of Wolfenstein 3D in 1992, the independent game developer id Software was keen to put their new 3D game engine to good use on a new title. The company’s chief designers John Romero and John Carmack ultimately produced Doom, a darker-themed first-person shooter game that allowed players to slay hordes of demons using a range of deadly weaponry. At the time of its release in 1993, it was considered to be one of the bloodiest and most controversial games ever made.
Within the first year of its release, it is estimated that over 20 million people played the game. Videogame historians have credited Doom as one of the main games to prompt an industry shift toward 3D gaming in the decades ahead.
